HUNT 0.7g — A Small Spoon That Helps You Read the Fish
When trout fishing in Tokyo, catching fish is not only about choosing the “best lure.”
The more important question is:
What are the trout willing to react to right now?
Water temperature, sunlight, fishing pressure, wind, stocking, and even a few minutes of changing conditions can completely change the way trout respond.
That is why I use HUNT 0.7g as one of my search lures.
It is not simply a lure for catching fish.
It helps me understand where the active trout are and how they want the lure presented.
HUNT 0.7g is a lightweight spoon that can be retrieved slowly while still giving the lure a natural movement.
For me, its main role is:
Search → Observe → Adjust → Catch
When I start fishing, I want to know:
Are trout looking near the surface?
Are they holding in the middle layer?
Will they chase horizontally?
Do they prefer a slower presentation?
Are they reacting to movement but refusing to bite?
HUNT 0.7g can help answer these questions.
Instead of repeatedly changing lures without understanding why, I watch how the trout react.
1. Start with a steady retrieve
Cast the lure and begin with a simple, steady retrieve.
The important thing is not only whether you catch a trout.
Watch the fish.
A trout following the lure is already valuable information.
If several trout begin following HUNT but do not bite, I know that the lure is attracting fish, but something about the presentation needs to change.
One of the first adjustments I make is retrieve speed.
I may try:
Normal → Slow → Very Slow
Sometimes trout will follow a lure but stop when it moves too quickly.
Reducing the speed can give the fish more time to approach and bite.
With a lightweight spoon like HUNT 0.7g, this slow presentation can be especially useful when trout are interested but cautious.
If there is little reaction near the surface, I let the lure sink.
Then I test another layer.
Surface → Mid-water → Deeper
This is one of the most important ideas in Japanese area trout fishing.
Finding the correct range can be more important than changing the lure itself.
When several trout react at approximately the same depth, I concentrate on keeping the lure in that zone for as long as possible.
When HUNT Attracts Fish but They Don't Bite
This is where lure fishing becomes interesting.
Imagine three or four trout follow HUNT 0.7g but none of them bite.
I don't immediately think:
“HUNT isn't working.”
Actually, it may be telling me something very useful.
The fish are interested.
Now I need to discover what will turn that interest into a bite.
I might:
In this situation, HUNT has already done its first job:
It found the fish that were willing to react.
Search Lure and Finishing Lure
This is an important part of my fishing style.
One lure does not need to do everything.
Sometimes HUNT 0.7g works as a search lure.
It shows me:
“There are active trout here.”
Then another lure may become the finishing lure that actually produces the bite.
On another day, HUNT itself may be the finishing lure.
The role changes depending on the fish.
That is why I don't believe there is one permanent “winning lure.”
There is only a lure that matches the fish's current condition.
What I Watch While Fishing
When guiding guests, I am constantly watching more than the fishing line.
I look at:
Follow distance — How far will the trout chase?
Reaction speed — Does the fish immediately turn toward the lure?
Depth — Where did the reaction begin?
Distance from the lure — Does the fish approach closely or stay behind it?
Bite timing — Does the fish attack during steady movement, after a speed change, or when the lure begins to fall?
These small reactions help determine the next cast.
This process is one of the reasons Japanese area trout fishing is so fascinating.
Fishing in Tokyo Is About Adjustment
Many visitors imagine fishing as:
Cast → Wait → Catch
Area trout fishing in Japan can be much more interactive.
The trout may be visible.
You can sometimes watch them follow your lure, reject it, turn away, and react again when you change something.
That means every cast gives you information.
HUNT 0.7g is one of the lures I use to start that conversation with the fish.
